Performed in Spanish and inspired by the magical realism of Gabriel García Márquez, Mexican composer Daniel Catán’s 1996 opera tells the fascinating story of a Brazilian opera diva who returns to her homeland to perform at the legendary opera house of Manaus and search for her beloved, lost in the Amazon. The premiere at the Met will star soprano Ailyn Pérez, in the role of Florencia Grimaldi, and under the direction of Yannick Nézet-Séguin, who will direct a gripping new production by Mary Zimmerman, which will bring the mysterious and magical kingdom of the Amazon to the stage of the Met. A distinguished cast of artists play the diva’s fellow travelers on the ship to Manaus, including soprano Gabriella Reyes, as journalist Rosalba; bass-baritone Greer Grimsley, as the ship’s captain; the baritone Mattia Olivieri, as his enigmatic first officer; tenor Mario Chang, as Arcadio, the captain’s nephew; mezzo-soprano Nancy Fabiola Herrera and baritone Michael Chioldi, as Paula and Álvaro’s partner.
